A Word from the Headteacher of Masooli Secondary School, Mr. Ernest Kakulira.
It was such a memorable time when two members of staff from Masooli were hosted at St.James’s from 31st Sept to 6th September 2008. It was a very wonderful experience to meet new welcoming and smiling faces. As members of Masooli secondary school community we are so delighted to be associated with the great school; St. James’s Church of England and Sports College. In a discussion held at Masooli Secondary School when staff from St. James’s; Mr. Roy Coulson and Mrs Pauline Hearn, made the first visit to Masooli from March 2nd to 8th 2008, we agreed that both institutions share a lot in common and the most important is their Christian foundation. The only major difference lies in the level of development. On behalf of the Board of Governors, Parents and Teachers’ Association, Administration, Staff and the entire pupils’ body, I wish to express our gratitude to St. James’s for the bursaries of forty needy pupils at Masooli, for providing spaces in your news letter production, and a web link on your website. We are proud be part of the extended family of St. James’s.
Background of Masooli Secondary School.Masooli Secondary School is a Church of Uganda founded, community based school. At the moment the enrolment stands at 158 pupils. The school is located eight miles along Kampala – Gayaza road, north-west of Kampala City of Uganda, in East Africa. The school offers both vocational and academic programmes to the rural young pupils of Nangabo sub county, Kyadondo County, in Wakiso district of central Uganda region. The priority of the school stems from its foundation and the objectives of the founders at its inception. The school was founded in 1986, on community participatory approach. At first the school shared buildings with the oldest primary school in the community. Later a sizable piece of land of six acres was acquired for the school, and construction of buildings commenced. Pupils and parents provided labour and materials for construction. At the moment a number of buildings have been constructed but at a very slow pace due to poor funding of the rural community. The support of the school is barely the responsibility of parents and guardians of the school. The school has a large number of pupils who have been victims of unfavourable circumstances, ranging from death of parents due to aids pandemic, broken homes and abject poverty. These problems have left many of our pupils vulnerable and helpless. Over the years Masooli Secondary School has effectively played a missionary role by taking care of the unfortunate and helpless children within and around the community, help them acquire education. Despite all the hitches, the school is advancing quite well with a committed board of governors and experienced and devoted staff. We are eagerly looking forward to the celebration of our first silver jubilee in 2011 which we have already started planning for.At the moment the school has enough class rooms for classes from senior one to senior six, with a small computer room. The school is an examination centre for both Uganda Certificate of Education and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education. As a school we are proud of our contribution on the capacity building of our dear mother land Uganda. Similarly, we are ever happy for the quality of our pupils, who qualify from this school to other higher institutions of learning.Effort is made by the time pupils leave the school, that they go with a package of values, not only academic but also, skills in various fields of vocational work, spiritual realisation, and leadership.Masooli Secondary proudly associates with other secondary schools with in Wakiso district, and also those which are Anglican Church founded in the oldest Diocese of Namirembe.

Due to the Christian foundation of the school, worship takes a central place in all the school activities. The head teacher acts as the voluntary chaplain of the school. There is a chapel committee constituted by pupils and headed by a chapel prefect. On the committee every class has a representative who is chosen unanimously based on the character of that person. They should be kind, ready to help others, and a spiritual person.
Every school day opens with prayers which last for fifteen minutes and then classes commence. For the boarding section, likewise before evening preps begin fifteen minutes time is devoted for prayers.Like in the morning usually pupils lead with opening prayer, a text is read from the bible followed by a brief preaching and then a closing prayer. On Sundays prayers are conducted in the main hall which serves as the chapel. Pupils lead in most cases and usually every Sunday there is a guest preacher. The most exciting part during worship is praising, pupils rehearse the day before, and during the service there are various presentations by groups and individuals. Our services are so fabulous and one cannot afford to miss.
